Early to rise…

There is an old adage, “Early to bed, and early to rise, makes someone healthy, wealthy and wise.”  I have been testing this theory for the past several weeks and found it to be AMAZINGLY true!

In addition to those high-performing professionals who start their days early, practitioners of many spiritual traditions around the world make a habit of waking before the sunrise.  The general consensus among successful individuals appears to be that doing several hours of focused meditation, prayer, visualization, exercise or otherwise organizing oneself in preparation for the day is quite advantageous.

Additionally, a benefit of waking early is also achieving higher quality sleep in the earlier part of the night.  Sleep before midnight is said to be twice as restful as that done in the hours after midnight.  According to Eastern knowledge of the body from the acupuncture tradition, the circulation and purification of blood through certain organs occurs at 11pm so one should be ideally lying down if not asleep.  And the lung meridian is the focus during early morning hours, so practicing spiritual meditation during that time is ideal.

We have been taught to believe that we need to rely upon a certain amount of consecutive hours of sleep to feel our best (perhaps 6-9hours on average), however this may not be the case.  The clarity of mind that comes from starting one’s day well leads to lower mental, emotional, and physical stress throughout the day.  As we become more peaceful, and our stress levels decrease, the need for sleep may also decrease.  Sleeping from 9:30 or 10pm until 3:30 or 4am may be more than enough. Additionally, I believe that there are many more physical, mental, emotional and spiritual benefits of an early sleep schedule, beyond what can even be mentioned here.

I find that listening to spiritual prayers, meditations, or talks in the morning helps to clear my mind.  Additionally having the support of friends and family is wonderful.  Meeting with others in the early morning to pray, meditate, have tea, and put positive energy into the day is an amazing way to keep yourself on a good schedule and energized for the day to come.

If you have never tried waking up early, I encourage you to try it for a few days, or whenever you are able to do it. The jump start that one can achieve on one’s day is invaluable.  You can always take a nap later in the day if necessary.

Being able to accomplish schedule changes such as this may require a STRONG INTENTION to overcome habitual behaviors such as staying awake late, or wasting time on the computer at night.  POSITIVE THINKING can help you to mentally prepare yourself to make positive life changes such as waking up early.  For help with positive thinking, see my wellness coaching services.
